Achille Bocchi (1488-1562) was a Bolognese humanist writer. He was a symbolist, historian, Greek lecturer, poet, and "humanae litterae" at the University of Bologna. In 1555 he wrote the book Symbolicarum quaestionum de universo genere, which "had as its subject the entirety of universal knowledge: physics, metaphysics, theology, dialectics, Love, life and death, hidden under the veil of fables and myths." It is one of the most fascinating and famous emblem books of the Italian Renaissance and is composed of 151 allegorical images created by Prospero Fontana, a Bolognese Mannerist painter, master of the Carracci. The 22 Major Arcana were chosen from the 151 original emblems and, since they were damaged, they were restored with a long process carried out by hand.

Achille Bocchi (Achilles Bocchius) was an Italian humanist, author, emblematist, historian and lector in Greek who taught at the University of Bologna, but was best known for this book 'Symbolicarum Quaestionum de Universo Genere' (of 1555), which "takes as its subject the whole of universal knowledge: physics, metaphysics, theology, dialectic, Love, Life and Death, packaging them under the veil of fables and myths." It is one of the most fascinating and renowned emblem books of the Italian Renaissance. The Major Arcana were chosen from 151 original images found in this historical book by Achille Bocchi. They unfortunately had become quite damaged over time and needed to be carefully restored for this ambitious undertaking.
