An emblem is a model to represent an idea and shows a pictorial part and a writing.
In 1531 the first book of emblems appeared, the Emblemata by Andrea Alciato (1492-1550) which aroused a fascination that lasted for several centuries, touching much of the countries of Western Europe.
"Emblem" in this sense refers to a didactic or moralizing combination of image and text intended to draw the reader into a self-reflective examination of their own life. Complicated associations of emblems convey moral information, a characteristic of the 16th-century artistic movement called Mannerism. This very special deck is inspired by these emblems from the 16th century up to the 19th century.
A single exception is made for De rerum naturis (World) from the 11th century, a source of inspiration for many subsequent emblems. Each Tarot card is accompanied by a motto, that is, an instructive meaning about the behavior to adopt.
The images have been redrawn and colored by hand, thus reviving the ancient and fascinating vividness of this unique and captivating art. -
